Zsiga the bass is working in the forest with the woodcutter Kálmán and his wife, Matilda. While the couple jokingly tease each other and argue about the creative power of words, Zsiga just smiles. However, when they jokingly formulate their wishes, he also joins in the game and wishes that his wife would have twelve children. When he gets home, he immediately discovers that his wish has indeed come true. However, the task of raising children so frightens the bass that he wishes: may the devil take him to hell to be a stove-burner! And as before, to his greatest surprise, this wish is also fulfilled.
